Charrette: Thoughts from a First Year

Architecture versus building. Music versus noise. The way I see it, architecture is a type of building, and music is a type of noise. It’s kinda like saying a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not necessarily a square. Architecture is that extra attention to detail, that extra calculation, that extra curve in the trim. It’s the way the light plays with the colors and textures that either make it cheerful or mellow.

I may not had a full week of college yet or gone to architecture camp or know any architects besides Frank Loyd Wright, but I’ve learned so much already. The technicalities, no, but what it takes, what it’s about. The collaboration of ideas and visions pieced together in a single project. Trying what works and challenging what doesn’t but could work. Transforming fantasies into realities. I’m sure my thoughts will change, and I may totally change my perspective. For now, that’s what I think architecture takes, what it’s about.
